FISM – DAY 3 – WED 8 JULY

FISM fatigue is fast setting in ... with minimal hours of sleep, getting oneself to the contest by 8:30 am is a Herculean feat. The schedule is brutal with literally no down time … but we wouldn't change it for the world ( ok, maybe some extra sleep ) Have had an amazing time meeting up with so many friends from around the globe. This is what truly makes FISM so special.

Speaking of brutal, though, as if Gay Ljungberg and his backstage crew don’t face enough difficulties – the curtain system has now packed up completely meaning all act transitions are now going to be done in the dark with a screen being wheeled on and off to hide the setup. Less than ideal!

On to the contest ...

Alexis Arts – Italy – Illusions
Fun, novel and surprisingly enjoyable. Prison theme with smoke, cages, glass penetration, SWAT team, chair appearance and an electric chair execution. How can you not like an act that wants to electrocute the magician ?

Nefesch – El Salvador – Mentalism
This category has surely been introduced to test me. A white masked performer to the cheesy strains of Memories from Cats ending with the revelation of a dog on his tshirt. And no – he didn’t see the irony.

Katayama Yukihiro – Japan – Manipulation
Obviously also a subscriber to the intensity school of magic … doves have now been replaced with card fans with thread loops attached for new instant productions. We really are all trying too hard.

Trigg Watson – USA – General Magic
A few magician friendly highlights with dancing slinky and vanishing silk in hat … but still suffers from that magic contest look. No more glass bubbles at FISM please. We managed to get rid of the fans in 2015 – but bubbles and matrixes are still haunting me.

Walter Maffei – Italy – Comedy
Adopting a somewhat exuberant ‘gay’ character who has a fetish for confetti we were treated to pin through balloon accompanied by orgasmic sounds. The Italians must enjoy this ?

Song da Min – Korea – General Magic
A very, very traditional ‘Asian’ act ( sorry Max ) … rose petals, flowers, fans ( just when I thought it was safe ), masks, zombie masks, floating butterflies, and just what every FISM needs – a snowstorm! I’m curious whether some performers feel it compulsory that they present “stereotypical” / cultural acts when they come to FISM ?

David Hung – China – Manipulation
Manipulation with bow ties ? Really ? Appearing bow ties. Color Changing bow ties. Some card manipulation. More dramatic hand gestures. A blue card. A yellow card. Another colored card. And then I shall throw them on the floor.

Franz Koffer – Hungary – General Magic
Accompanied by a piano – this was music to fall asleep to. Note to contestants – your audience have watched over 100 acts by now - feel for us. Don’t do card manipulation if you have nothing to bring to the party. Bird cage appearance. reversing silk, slow billiard balls, a touch of juggling … and a levitating case.

Luca Volpe – England – Mentalism
Dreams – fantasy – and drawn out routine of finding a motivational quote and unlocking a combination. Lacked excitement.

Seiya – Japan – General Magic
A golf themed act. Silk to golf ball. Ball in bottle. Shrinking club. Some ball manipulation … little build up and in need of a dose of energy.

Caio – Brazil – Manipulation
Incredible manipulation of round lit candles that added a whole new dimension to the routine. Add in some dexterous jumbo card manipulation and we had an impressive skilled act. Only let down by the somewhat predictable card fountain at the end.

Christian and Katalina – USA – Mentalism
My favourite category returns. An object lesson on how NOT to perform mentalism. Complexity and confusion does not equal wonder or amazement. Mentalism needs to be clean, direct and impactful. I have never seen such a complicated and ridiculous setup … 3 envelopes in front of 3 places. we’ll switch this, we’ll change that, this color matches that, which equals the game you chose before, and inside each envelope is poker chip, and inside this book is a page … who can possibly follow this convoluted mess? Stunned stupor from the audience … followed by pity applause. It is beyond painful. The auto pilot scripting and hammed reactions make it even worse.

Mago Sebak – Argentina – Manipulation
A talented youngster who unfortunately is currently out of his depth. Homemade table and cardboard stereo – along with every manipulation under the sun. He should not have been put through - but I look forward to seeing him in future years. An engaging stage presence that puts so many adult performers to shame.

PJ Wen – China – Illusions
Another box pusher with dramatic poses and ridiculous hand gestures – along with a pesky rose that keeps on appearing inside all his boxes.

Matus – Argentina – General Magic
All very confusing with uninspired card manipulation, floating table and ridiculous vanish of a candelabra.

Michael Dardant – USA – Comedy Magic
Tragically sad. May go down well in New Orleans – but certainly not at FISM. The debate has been had before – but we need to re-evaluate where there should be a separate category for comedy at all ?

Christian Bischof – Switzerland – Mentalism
A swami gimmick at FISM ? And it’s somewhat self-evident to any audience that your sign reads differently depending on how you hold it. That’s not magic – it’s common sense.

Timothy Trust & Diamond – Germany – Illusions
Their sword box is a thing of beauty with blood smearing everywhere and that psychotic glint in Timothy’s eye. I only wish they would go further into that character as he plays the role so exceptionally well.

Thommy Ten & Amelie Marc (Germany)
Mental Magic

Second sight acts are clearly becoming very popular. With Thommy being in the audience selecting items - the presentation is more impactful than yesterday's act with the spectators already on stage. The problem though is the precision accuracy of the revelations. Couple this with the apparent lack of verbal transmission - a strange occurrence of the mic continually cutting out ( radio frequency interference ? ) and we are pointing to the direct use of electronics. And lay audiences would likely believe the same. And when that happens - the entire presentation is reduced to nothing more than a puzzle ...

Jeff and Tessa Evason remain the undisputed master of this field - having that critical ingredient for success - believability.

Marc Dossetto (France)
Stage Illusions

Projection and video mapping. Good but no where near the level of what we have seen on the "got talent" franchises ... I don't know whether I should applaud the performer or the CGI animator ?

Jonas Chen – Taiwan – General Magic
Dove production. Appearing flower. Another dove. Slow dove from jacket. And then a plainly visible dove from jacket ending with the production of his lady love interest.

Clarice / Simone – Germany – General Magic
Please stop squealing. An Oscars themed mentalism act that was exceptionally disappointing compared to the usual standard of German competitors. Choose a film here. Think of a director there. Select from my happen to have pile of “movie” books here.

Another exhausting morning done – with 20 minutes to rush on over to the last of the close-up contests.

The over-run on the stage contest has now thrown the entire schedule out. Delaying the start of the close-up … it also doesn’t help that Lu Chen has gone awol ;-) A search party has been dispatched …

On to the close-up … and the good news, no whistle this morning.

David Pricking – Germany – Micro Magic
Pocket watch to coins, matrix with appearing watches, coin to watches and ending with the matrix being done atop a completely transparent surface. Act got a very enthusiastic response.

Reuben Moreland – USA – Parlor
Childhood themed act with toys, etch-a-sketch and a confusing chop cup routine involving a ball on a string. Ends on fism favourite – a dice matrix.

Yuri Kaine – France – Micro
Playing the role of teacher – the concept is nice, but the execution poor. He messed up twice, swore on stage – and ended up growing a plant in his hands.

Ninjaba – Hungary – Parlor
Someone forgot their meds this morning. Lots of coin throwing making very little sense. Way too fast and very confusing.

And is it really too much to ask to not have a hand sticking out the back curtain trying their best to keep the drapes closed because no one was bothered to put up a backdrop for the Contest ? The pieces of duct tape sticking out the curtain adds a particularly professional touch.

Seol Park – Korea – Micro
Michael Ammar “super-practice session” with some unbelievable visuals that look like pure special fx. The cup and pen rewind sequence is magical! Audience LOVE him.

Viktor Renner – Germany – Micro
Sponge ball magic at FISM ? Appearing sponges. Color changing sponges. And lots of sponges. Not for me – but audience enjoyed.

Lucca – Austria – Parlour
Letter cards. Numerology tables. Long list of numbers. And magically the total matches the prediction.

Mario Lopez – Spain – Micro
Cigarette magic … up the nose, out the mouth, an incredible visual flipping sequence. Audience favourite.

Magic Brothers – Korea – Parlor
A duo act always adds a nice dimension to a performance. Cups and balls. Magician rivalry … a fun and enjoyable act.

Pierric – Switzerland – Parlor
A brilliant performance … character, story, incredibly engaging. Just enough time for 3 tricks is the premise with all the elements repeating as time escapes him. Pierric is a professional actor – and his dramatic skills shine through. This isn’t just an act – it is entertainment. The audience erupted – and I concur. A firm favourite.

Alberto Lorenzo – USA – Micro Magic
Lets produce dice, bigger dice, little dice, more dice and – surprise – extra dice. Performers – I need a reason to care. And jumbo dice isn’t it.

Ignacio Lopez - Argentina - Parlor
Different people seeing the same card differently. Theme of reality & imagination. Far too slow.

Rune Carlsen – Norway – Magic
Reality & fantasy theme ( seems to be popular trend ) Cups and balls, silver to copper and coins through table. The music puts one to sleep.

Martin Braessas – Argentina – Parlor
Cigarettes are back in fashion. Trying to get a cup of tea before work and all manner of strange things befall him.

Ludovic Juillot – France - Micro
Mafioso character calling in his debt. Coin matrix ( oh joy ) and vanishing pocket watches. Act is dragging.

Mott Sun – Parlo – Japan
“Japanese English” ( his words ) Coin vanishes, color changing coins and oh joy – another matrix. Contestants for 2018 – matrix is now banned.

And that’s it ! The final day of close-up. A marathon session of note. Some amazing acts and I can’t wait to see what the jury comes up with …

GALA DINNER

Any organiser who attempts to feed 2500+ magicians is generally asking for trouble … and I had my doubts … but 10 out 10 to the organisers. The White Gala was a relaxed informal outdoor affair – with plentiful food, wine and good company … many were partying the night away. An impressive feat.

CLOSE-UP GALA SHOW

A superb cast – and a highly enjoyable show ( complete with Mexican waves ) – if not just a touch too long. Everyone delivered – The Fat Bros, Guy Hollingworth, David Williamson, Armando Lucero and the incredible Eugene Burger who so brings to life the power of story telling. Youtube kid, Moritz Mueller, also made a special guest appearance in true Williamson comic style.

Day 3 done and dusted … we’re now half way through the magic marathon that is FISM!

Y ración doble, porque ya tenemos también los comentarios del concurso de escena del DIA 4!:

FISM DAY 4

Stage Contest

It seems that the Soprano stereotype really does exist. I watched this morning as some of the “ushers” / “local club members” physically intimidated those in the front rows to get them to move so as to ostensibly clear the view for the judges three rows behind. In reality, it seems it was more a case of finding space for the local club members friends & family ;-)

Zuk & Silhouette – Comedy Magic – France
Reminiscent of Vik and Fabrini … golfer mannequin comes to life. Lots of clowning, zombie broom and other antics. Popular with the assembled crowds.

Den Den - Japan – Manipulation
Manipulation with paper cranes. Multiplying cranes, incredible vanishing cranes, disintegrating in mid-air cranes and lots and lots of eye candy. Unfortunately the act hit a technical difficulty and Den Den Den spent a good few seconds with his back to the audience whilst he attempted to reset something. This will clearly mar what was a particularly strong act.

Bond Lee – General Magic – Korea
Over produced, dramatic gazes to the heavens, animated snow man and a snowstorm finish. The concept has potential but still needs work.

--->The curtain of death has struck and is now jammed … we are back to setting up in the dark and using screens to shelter the performers whilst they setup. The joys of technology.

There also bizarrely appears to be zero comms between the jury and backstage - so Vadim Savenkov went ahead and commenced with out all the jury being present following the curtain debacle. It is a ridiculous state of affairs to be having the jury standing up yelling at a competitor to stop his act because they can't alert backstage ...

Very poor show all round. FISM and the competitor deserves better.

Vadim Savenjov – Comedy Magic – Russia
After his embarrassing false start, the audience is very much behind him. Clever use of sound fx, entertaining and quirky – the audience give him the applause he deserves.

Laurent Piron – General Magic – Belgium
Sponge balls, parlour chop cup routine with tea & more sponge balls, and an amazing cascade of sponge balls from the heavens that literally saw the stage COVERED with sponges ( Tom Stone eat your heart out ;-)

Charlie Mag – Manipulation – Spain
Absolutely ridiculous. The pose – the gestures – the intensity. You would swear he had ended world hunger by the look of satisfaction on his face. You produced a playing card. Lets dial it back a bit.

Ricky Chang – General Magic – Taiwan
Restaurant scene with appearing bottle from menu, flaring, levitating can during airborne and production of tray and martini glass. All in all unmemorable.

Florian Sainvet – Manipulation – France
Dressed in an LED style Tron costume – there were moments of amazing special fx and visual vanishes – but another person possibly taking himself too seriously.

Arsene Lupin – Poland – General Magic
Backstage dressing room scene. Mirror ‘mirage style’ duplication effect with multiplying chairs ending in the appearance of ‘clones’ of the performer and assistant.

Huang Zheng – Spain – General Magic
A performer standing atop a staircase with a hidden fan contained within manipulating the power of air. An amazing concept worth exploring. Spectacular silk vanish visually being absorbed into the palm of her hand along with beautiful flying silk.

Vladimir Volkoff – France – Comedy
An imaginary dog continually harassing the performers. Billiard balls, card throwing and plenty of crazy antics.

Anson Lee – Manipulation – Taiwan
Silk to candle, fantasio candles ( these need to be added to the banned list ) Card manipulation, color cards, silks and jumbo colored cards. Been there, done that.

C.Y. – General Magic – Korea
Silk to bird on sleeve, smoke in mouth, fire palms and oh so dramatic.

Oh Hyunseung – Manipulation – Korea
DJ with Beatles LP and CD manipulation. CDs ? You come from the most technologically advanced nation on earth and you are doing magic with CDs … strange choice.

Duet Samuylov & Ageeva – General Magic – Russia
Quick change dance act set in a hotel lobby foyer.

Simon Almers – General Magic – Sweden
Antique store setting with billiard balls, cut tie, appearing globe and rewind sequence. The act never seems to go anywhere and is need of a story arc.

Hector Mancha – Manipulation – Spain
Sublime! Think Addams Family Uncle Fester doing card / “bills” manipulation and you have Hector Mancha. Filled with character, incredible moments and a beautiful ending. Finally a reason to care about manipulation. Bravo! A joy to watch. And clearly flesh tone sleeves are the new edge ;-) He brought the house down.

The Grand Carlini – General Magic – Spain
A marionette puppet doing somewhat of a parody of magic … the puppet got a greater response than nearly all of his human counterparts.

Lukas – Manipulation – Korea
Roses, flowers & petals. Silk to billiard balls. Pained facial expressions and I’m left thinking someone maybe died in the family. Technically brilliant but now befalling the same fate as most of the current crop of ‘Asian invasion’ manipulators – their acts are becoming generic and interchangeable. The missing ingredient as Hector Mancha has demonstrated is character.

Another fantastic day of FISM stage magic … and in a rare treat, the next ‘compulsory’ event on my line-up – the gala stage show - is only scheduled for another 7 hours. So much deserved down time ;-) And a chance to check out the dealers.
